Premature Roof Failures
IMPROPER ROOF VENTILATION
Roofs need to breath and is shown to perform better and last longer.
Ridge Vents in combination with Intake Vents, Soffit Vents or Vented Drip Edge, allow air to flow on the underside of the roof deck keeping the attic cooler in the summer and drier in the winter.
- Not enough nails per shingle
- No underlayment
- Improper or No Roof Venting
- No flashing installed
- Missing starter course shingling along gutter lines and or rake boards
- Incorrect roof pattern installation
The only benefit to installing a layer over your existing roof shingles is the price being cheaper. Overlaying is not good roofing practice. If you don’t remove your roof down to the sheathing then how will you determine if you have the proper underlayment or if you have any existing rot damage? A roof overlay will not last as long as a full roof replacement and also may void the full shingle warranty.
ROOF MANUFACTORING DEFECTS
Not all roof defects result in improper ventilation or poor workmanship it could very well be a manufacturing defect. Asphalt Shingles manufacturing defects sometimes, occur during the manufacturing process that affect the way shingles look or perform over time. This occurrence is often challenging to prove, as some manufacturers are unlikely to own up to whether it is or not.
